Sy's Barbershop and Pool Hall is Jay D. Gerber's third book.

Jay (1941–2019) grew up in Southwest Kansas. He was born with spine and hand deformities that required numerous surgeries and painful stretching therapy, but he remembered most the predawn trips with his dad to doctors in Wichita, singing along with Colorado Pete and Millie and Sue on the radio. As chief of the Center for Disease Control in Kansas City, Jay researched how humans in Iowa contracted histoplasmosis from birds. As a research scientist for over 25 years with Pfizer Animal Health, he earned numerous patents while developing vaccines for animals, including one to prevent feline leukemia in cats. In retirement, Jay wrote his poetic memoirs and developed painting skills, selling his work privately and from several Midwestern galleries. Throughout his life and his 15 years with Parkinson's disease, Jay credited good times with family and friends as the greatest motivation and pleasures of his life.

"Jay Gerber's poems are impressive, because, for one thing, they are utterly free of pretension. And, too, they reflect no frills or baubles. They are honest and direct, and maybe most important, they seem to me to derive directly from the heart." —William Koefkorn, Nebraska State Poet, regarding Time on the LA Case

"How I enjoyed these poems (and learned from them), their close observation of humans and the natural world, their colorful insights into childhood. I highly recommend the poetry of Jay Gerber: the artist's eye and the poet's heart!" —Marjorie Saiser, winner of Academy of American Poets Prize, Vreelands Award, Nebraska Literary Heritage Award, Mildred Bennett Award, Willa Award, and several Nebraska Book Awards, regarding Sy's Barbershop and Pool Hall
